Managing Employee Issues from Coaching to Termination

If you are like most HR professionals, the job duties you least enjoy are disciplining and discharging employees. However, with the proper preparation and the knowledge of how to minimize legal risk for your organization, you can feel confident in your abilities to successfully perform those difficult duties. This half-day course will prepare you to effectively coach, discipline and when necessary terminate employees. You will discover the essential elements of a corrective discipline process and how to improve performance with coaching. You will also learn the do’s and don’ts when terminating an employee and how to handle difficult employee reactions.

Learning Objectives

• Apply steps to effectively coach employees for improved performance
• Take preventive measures for progressive discipline and discharge
• Identify when corrective discipline is appropriate
• Identify the steps in the corrective discipline process
• Utilize proper documentation
• Handle a termination meeting successfully
• Terminate an employee while minimizing legal risk
• Conduct lawful terminations during periods of layoffs and Reduction in Force
• Respond effectively to reference requests and other requests for information on discharged employees
