Urban mushroom farming may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a community organization, but it is one of the most exciting and innovative initiatives led by EANE member, the Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts (SEACMA).
Founded in 1999 to strengthen communities and provide meaningful support to immigrants while connecting longtime residents, SEACMA has built a wide range of culturally rich programs and practical resources that foster inclusion, opportunity, and belonging throughout Central Massachusetts. The organization supports Southeast Asian immigrants, refugees, and long-term residents with services designed to help them integrate, thrive, and contribute to the community. These include ESL classes, youth leadership development, health and wellness programs such as dragon dance classes and table tennis, and direct referral services for employment, education, and social support.
SEACMA serves a linguistically diverse community across multiple cultural backgrounds, helping to break down barriers and build a strong sense of belonging.
If you’re familiar with Worcester’s Annual Asian Festival, now 22 years strong, SEACMA is the team behind it. Held each June, the festival brings together performers, traditional arts, food, and cultural heritage from thirteen Asian nations, drawing thousands of residents from across the region.
SEACMA’s mushroom initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to food security and sustainability. Supported by a full-time biologist specializing in expanding growing capacity, the program produces fresh, nutritious food sold at local farmers markets while creating hands-on learning opportunities and pathways for economic growth. Through partnerships with local farmers, SEACMA also encourages the cultivation of vegetables that reflect Asian culinary traditions.
In the spirit of the upcoming Lunar New Year, Year of the Horse, a symbol of growth, strength, and forward momentum, EANE is proud to spotlight the Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts.
