Small Town, Global impact

If you drive out to Orange, Massachusetts, into an unassuming industrial park, you’ll find a small office designed to look like a rustic cabin coffee shop. Spoiler: it’s not open to the public, but it is home to one of the most impactful coffee companies in the world.

From day one, Dean’s Beans set out to prove that a business could benefit its suppliers, workers, community, and the environment, all while remaining profitable. That philosophy still drives everything they do. Their concept of “community” stretches far beyond their hometown. Yes, they invest locally where their employees live and work. But just as importantly, they invest in the farming communities around the world that grow their coffee.

These aren’t short-term relationships. These relationships are built to last. Dean’s Beans works in long-term partnership with farmers, staying connected through the real challenges that come with growing coffee, from drought and flooding to environmental changes. Together, the focus is on strengthening resilience and building shared success over time.

Their environmental commitment goes deeper than organic certification. Shade-grown coffee, a core part of their sourcing, preserves natural ecosystem, protecting soil, supporting biodiversity, and providing critical habitats for migratory birds and pollinators like Monarch butterflies. And yes, Bird Friendly  Certified coffee is pretty tasty too.

Operationally, the company walks the talk: recycled packaging and solar-powered roastery reduce their footprint.

The results speak for themselves. Dean’s Beans is now the highest-scoring B Corp-certified coffee roaster in the world, with a B Impact Score of 168. In case you were wondering, a score of 80 is required for certification and far above the average business score of 50.9.

In a world where “ethical” has become a marketing buzzword, Dean’s Beans offers something different: proof. Not just that coffee can be sourced responsibly, but that a business can be built entirely around doing good, at every level.

Next time you see Dean’s Beans on a grocery shelf or café menu, take a moment. That cup represents more than great coffee. It connects you to a global network of farmers, ecosystems, and a model for how business can be done better.

We are proud to support EANE member Dean’s Beans as they change the world, one employee, one farmer and one coffee bean at a time.
